札幌の岡本俊治さんが制作中であったカナディアン･カヌーが、オーストラリアへ旅立った。セーリングではない。コンテナ船に積み込まれて、出荷された。ゴールドコーストの水路を自由にセーリングする姿が、想像される。
このカナディアン･カヌーは横山晃の設計で、サバニ船型を持つ。パドリングでも、セーリングでも実に速い。極端に造波抵抗が少ないからだ。サバニ船型共通の特徴だ。
工作水準は実に高い。第１級の精度と、仕上がりの美しさを併せ持っている。

単独世界一周最年少記録かどうかは、米国では大きな論争になっているようだ。帆走記録として認めないとするグループが上げている理由は、以下の2点だ。
１．パナマ運河を通ったときや出入港時に、エンジンを使用して走行したことがある。
２．国際セーリング連盟(ISAF)が支持するthe World Speed Sailing Record Council (WSSRC)が認めていないから。
私が所属するASA (American Sailing Association) は、ザックのスポンサーの一員となり、記録の公式認定を行った。
論争の背景には、政治的な立場の違いもあるようだ。私はザックのセーリング記録に、何ら問題ないという立場で、論争に加わっている。
以下のコメントを論争の場となっているサイトへ投稿した。

“Nice job but no sailing record” is absolutely wrong. It is a fact that
Zac Sunderland has accomplished the feat of being the youngest solo
circumnavigator on record. The controversy surrounding this
accomplishment is wrong for two main reasons:
1. Authorization
WSSRC is not the authority for all great adventure sailing records as
the name says. Their authority is only valid if people agree and nobody
knows about WSSRC in Japan. Why does Zac’s record have to be authorized
by WSSRC? My record is not recognized by WSSRC. How about Captain Joshua
Slocum or Magellan’s circumnavigation?
2. Diesel propulsion and route
Recalling Magellan and Slocum’s record circumnavigations, they chose
routes and used propulsion methods that would also be disputed by the
WSSRC.
Victoria was towed into Seville to finish her last sail to homeport
against the stream on the Guadalquivir River. The towing boats used
rowing propulsion.
Captain Joshua Slocum also used oars and you can see him on Spray
maneuvering with an oar on page 164 of his book “Sailing alone around
the world.”
I myself also used oar propulsion to leave docks.
How can you say that Magellan’s, Slocum’s and my circumnavigation are
not sailing around the world records? Zac accomplished something very
great and the people who dispute this seem very petty.
Zac Sunderland’s circumnavigation was a great challenge and a remarkable
human achievement. It’s not only that he set a world record of the
youngest solo sailor around the world but Zac shows us in the modern age
how a 17 year man can come to become an accomplished adventurer.
I greatly admire Zac’s great adventure and can relate to the challenge
as a solo circumnavigator in a small sail boat. The bravery he showed us
is a bright star not only in our sailing community but for all of
humanity.

青木ヨットスクールのヨット普及活動は、おおさか地域創造ファンドの事業として認定され、大阪府からの助成を受けている。ファンド事業者と関係者の会合が泉南市のそばや「泉庵」で行われたので、参加した。
地域創造ファンドの認定企業と団体から、自己紹介があった。南泉州一体の自治体担当者も多数参加され、挨拶があった。しかし地元の田尻町からは、参加がない。なんだか寂しい限りだ。
それにしても、そばは本格的にうまい。腰もほどよく強くて、そばの良い香りも高い。「泉州高原そば」というとのことだが、そば自体も育成し、収穫したのを打っている。泉州では堺の「ちくま」以外においしいそば屋を知らなかったので、うれしい限りだ。

【7月17日 AFP】米カリフォルニア州の17歳の少年が16日、ヨットによる単独世界一周航海の世界最年少記録を達成した。
ロサンゼルス（Los Angeles）の港に帰還したザック・サンダーランド（Zac Sunderland ）さん（17）は、家族や友人たちの歓迎を受け、「とんでもない13か月間だった。戻ってくることができて最高だよ」と、喜びを語った。
サンダーランドさんは2008年6月14日、16歳で全長約11メートルのヨット「イントレピッド（Intrepid）号」に乗り込み、ロサンゼルスを出発。太平洋を西に進み、11月29日にはアフリカ大陸南端の喜望峰の沖で17歳の誕生日を迎えた。
今回の航海についての本を執筆することが、サンダーランドさんの目下の希望だ。自分の冒険が、他の若者たちが「やる気」を起こすきっかけになればいいと考えている。
「今の世の中は、何かというと15-18歳の若者をひとくくりにまとめて、たいしたことはできないと考えがちだ。どうせ学校へ行ってアメフトに興じるだけだってね」とサンダーランドさん。「だけど、ちゃんとした動機と抱負さえあれば、若者だってもっといろいろなことができるはずだ。僕だって、いちかばちかやってみただけだ」
現在、やはり17歳の英国の少年マイク・パーンハム（Mike Pernham）さんも、単独世界一周航海の新記録に挑戦中。17日にはブログでサンダーランドさんの記録達成を「よくやった、ザック！」とたたえた。

日本では、ほとんど知られていないが、ザック・サンダーランドが今週中に、マリーナ・デル・レイ（ロサンゼルス）へ帰港する。2008年6月に出港して以来、一人ヨットで、世界周航の旅を続けてきた。出港したときは16歳であった。
米国ではヨット界だけではなく、国のヒーローとして大きく取り上げられている。世界一周最年少記録の意味は大きい。また現在米国は、イラン問題の失敗や世界経済危機を招いたことで、自信喪失をしている。その様な社会状況の中で、ザックのチャレンジ、勇気が多くの共感を呼んでいる面もあろう。
しかしそれだけではない。米国人の価値観の一つと言って良い、チャレンジャーへの素直な賞賛があげられる。チャレンジする勇気と、そこから個人として独立を獲得することを目標とする子供の育て方が、広く共有されているのも大きなニュースとなっている理由であろう。多くの企業や個人が、ザックをサポートしていることからも、うなずける。
日本でザックの世界周航が、ほとんど報じられていないのとは対照的で、まことに残念なことである。

human achievement. It’s not only by the world record of the youngest
sail around the world but Zac shows us in modern age how a 17 year man can

Let’s compare with circumnavigating in an apace ship and see how Zac’s
attempt encourages people facing to storms, illness, loneliness, hunger,
anxiety, and fear to survive.
1. Zac is a 17 year old boy.
Astronauts are elder.
2. Zac made all the decisions by himself.
NASA organize most of decisions instead of crew members onboard.
3. Zac fight with damages on rig, hull, electric and navigation
instruments on the sea by himself.
Crew members in a space ship are all experts of those damages.
4. Zac battle storms, illness, loneliness, hunger, anxiety, and fear to
survive in the most hostile environment on the planet by himself.
Astronauts can have help form other members.
I admire Zac’s great adventure and challenge as one of a solo
circumnavigator in a smallest sail boat.
The brave he showed us a bright star not only sailing society and
American nation but all the human.
